- Title:
- Statutes for the running of Marrick Priory
- Scope & Content:
-
A set of statutes for the prioress and nuns of Marrick Priory, Yorkshire, to follow, set down following an inquisition held at Marrick on Tuesday just before the Feast of St Denis [8 October] 1252. The statutes set out how the prioress should treat her nuns, rules around guests at the priory, restricting the admission of new members, granting corrodies without the bishop’s permission, managing the priory’s livestock, issuing documents, or selling its goods.
The document appears to be the result of a visitation of the priory, which would have been undertaken by either the archbishop of York, Walter de Gray (r. 1216-55), or the archdeacon of Richmond, John le Romeyn (r. by 1241–by 1254).
Endorsed: in a 16th-century hand, ‘inquisitio de regulis monialis 1252.’
