Grant of Eleanor of Aquitaine to the Abbey of Saint-Maixent of immunity from certain services
- Scope & Content:
-
Grant by Eleanor of Aquitaine (b. c. 1122, d. 1204), Queen of England, Duchess of Normandy and Aquitaine, and Countess of Anjou, to the abbot and monks of the Abbey of Saint-Maixent (diocese of Poitiers), of immunity from the procuration paid to her and the services due from the forests of Saura, subject to the daily feeding of three paupers at the refectory and the celebration of masses for the queen's soul.
Made in consideration of numerous injuries inflicted upon the monastery by her son, the late King Richard I (r. 1189-1199), with the consent of King John (r. 1199 -1216) and at the request of Bishop Maurice of Poitiers (fl. 1198-1214).
Given at Fontevraud, 6 October 1200 (2 John) and ratified by the queen herself.
Formerly affixed with a seal, now wanting.
Endorsed in several 13th-, 17th- and 18th-century hands, containing summaries of the content.
Eleanor was the widow of King Henry II (r. 1154-1189).
