Confirmation by Alfonso of Brienne (b. c. 1228, d. 1270), Count of Eu and Grand Chamberlain of France, and his wife Marie de Lusignan (b. c. 1223, d. 1260), with Jean Mathieu, of a grant of 15 bushels of wheat a year to the Abbey of St Anthony, Paris; March 1255.
Affixed with two seals. The first, a fragmentary seal of Alfonso of Brienne, Count of Eu: an oval, green, showing Alfonso armoured and on horseback riding to the right, holding a heraldic shield with a lion rampant, the horse springing, its caparisons bearing semé of billets all over lions rampant, with the legend, ‘…hon…’ The reverse, a smaller round counterseal, showing a heraldic shield with the arms of Lusignan, barry of twelve, in chief a label of five points. Above the shield is a fleur-de-lys for Issoudon, on the right a three-towered castle for the county of Eu (?) and on the left an eagle, for the county of Artois (?), with the legend, ‘camerarii regni francie’ (Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1898), V, p. 150).
The second, an imperfect seal of Marie de Lusignan, Countess of Eu: a lozenge, green, showing a full-length figure of Marie turned slightly to the right, wearing a dress, cloak and headdress, with her left hand on her breast, her right outstretched and holding a fleur-de-lys, a small dog leaping on her right, two cinquefoils on her left, with the legend, ‘…gillum marie …mitisse avgi sigillu[m] contrasigilli’. The reverse, a small round counterseal, showing a heraldic shield, barruly, a label of five points in chief, with the legend, ‘sigillu[m] contrasigilli’ (Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1898), V, p. 651).
