Margaret of France (b. c. 1279, d. 1318), Queen of England and second wife of Edward I (r. 1272-1307), issues an acquittance to John de Sandale, Keeper of the Exchange of London, for a payment into her wardrobe of £159 8s. 7d., as received by the queen’s keeper of the wardrobe, John de Godele; given at Woodstock, 30 September 1301 [29 Edward I].
Affixed by Margaret’s red seal on a parchment tag. Within finely carved gothic rose-shaped device a shield of arms: England and France dimidiated in pale. In the field, among other emblems now broken away, two lions rampant, in allusion to the queen’s maternal Arms of Brabant. The other spaces of the rose contain each a letter of the queen’s name, of which only … A R ….A remain (Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), I, p. 100).
