Indenture whereby Joan, Dowager Princess of Wales and Countess of Kent (b. c. 1328, d. 1385), the widow of Edward of Woodstock, the Black Prince (b. 1330, d. 1376)], as kinswoman (‘consanguinea’) and heiress of Joanna de Stotevill, Lady of Cottingham, makes agreement with the men, burgesses, wardens and the whole commonalty of Beverley, Yorkshire, regarding an annual rent of 6 silver marks; given at Missenden, on 20 April 1380 [3 Richard II].
This payment had been granted in 1269 to Joanna de Stotevill by Walter Giffard (fl. 1266-1279), archbishop of York, in the vill of 'Waghen', to be received from the abbot and convent of Meaux, and which the said abbot used to pay towards the cleansing of the River Hull.
A chirograph, divided at the head of the document. The list of men of Beverley begins with Richard de Walkyngton.
Endorsed: in a 15th-century hand; in a modern hand: 20th April 3rd Richard 2nd: 1380’ and ‘J.P.E.’; previous reference: ‘nº 85’.
Affixed with Joan’s red seal, within a finely carved and pointed gothic quatrefoil, a shield of arms: per pale, dex., quarterly, I, 4, France (ancient); 2, 3, England, with label of three points for difference, Prince Edward, sin., England, within a bordure, Edmund Plantagenet, of Woodstock, Earl of Kent. Over the shield the initial letter E, at the sides the initial letters I. P. With the legend: ‘s’. iho’e . p’ncipisse …. ie z· wall’ · ducisse · cornub’ · et · comitisse · cestr · et · kancie.
