(a) DEEDS, from 1130 to 1637, chiefly relating to (1) Waltham Forest, co. Essex, (2) the family of Barrington, of Barrington Hall, in Hatfield Broad Oak, co. Essex, and (3) Hatfield Broad Oak Priory, founded by Alberic de Vere as a cell to Rennes Abbey, in Brittany. Among the documents are charters of Kings Henry I., Stephen, Henry II., etc., and of Robert de Brus, Earl of Carrick, afterwards King of Scotland. In No. 28,325, Henry of Huntingdon, the chronicler, occurs as Archdeacon, in A.D. 1050. There are also eight deeds (28,498-28,500, 28,508, 28,510-28,512, 28,536), to which appear as witnesses Geoffrey de Chaucre and Thomas, his son, temp. Edw. I. [Thomas, son of the poet Chaucer, married Maude de Burghersh, lady of Hatfield Peverel Manor.] John Lidgate, the poet, also occurs (28,613) as Prior of Hatfield.
