- Title:
- Foundation charter of Lacock Abbey, granted by Ela, countess of Salisbury
- Scope & Content:
-
Grant by Ela of Salisbury (b. in or after 1190, d. 1261), countess of Salisbury, for God and for the soul of William Longspée (b. in or before 1167, d. 1226) her husband, and all their ancestors, and for William Longspée (b. c. 1212, d. 1250), her eldest son, and all her other free tenants and heirs, of her manor of Lacock and the advowson of the church, to found a nunnery there. The date based on de Burgh’s creation as earl of Kent (1227) and William II Marshal’s death (1231).
Witnesses include: Hubert de Burgh, earl of Kent and Justiciar of England, William II Marshal, earl of Pembroke, William de Warrene, earl of Surrey, and Ralph son of Nicholas, steward of the king.
Endorsed: in a faded 16th-century hand, ‘Relat in regio / reges 1537 / resent / regni regestor’; in a 17th century hand, ‘Carta Fundationis Abbatiae de Lacock in Com’ Wilts’’; in another 16th century hand, ‘Lacock / the original gyft.’
A transcription made in the late 18th century (now Stowe MS 666, f. 78r), includes a coloured drawing of the seal of the countess of Salisbury, which is no longer attached. When the transcript was made, the charter was owned by the English antiquary and palaeographer Thomas Astle (b. 1735, d. 1803).
