CHARTER OF KING STEPHEN confirming the Benedictine Priory of Eye, co. Suff., in all its possessions; circa Dec. 1137-March 1138. Latin. The properties are enumerated in detail. Regesta Regum Anglo-Normannorum, iii (1968), no. 288. A copy made from this original in the early 17th cent., which is preserved in Cotton MS. Vitel. F.IV, ff. 79-80v, shows the seal complete. Owned in 1630 by Lord William Howard of Naworth, see Dugdale, Monasticon (1821), iii, p. 405. Possibly owned by Thomas Howard, 8th Duke of Norfolk, 1714, Peter Le Neve, antiquary (d.1729), Thomas Martin of Palgrave (d.1771) and John Ives (d.1776). Subsequently owned by Sir John Fenn, antiquary (d.1794), Puttick & Simpson, 17 July 1866, lot 785. Phillipps MS. 32925. Purchased at Sotheby's, 25 Nov. 1969, lot 444, with the aid of the Friends of the National Libraries.
