Household expenses of Philippa of Hainault, queen of England
- Scope & Content:
-
This roll contains a fragmentary account of the household expenses of Queen Philippa of Hainault (b. c. 1314, d. 1369), wife of King Edward III (r. 1327-1377). This roll is a loose middle membrane from a larger roll, now lost.
Records payments made by the queen’s household between 20 November and 18 January of an unknown year of Philippa’s life. The year cannot be ascertained, as the beginning and the end of the roll are now lost.
The roll contains payments made to various people, including Thomas de Tettebury (fl. c. 1330s-1360s), clerk of the Great Wardrobe to Queen Philippa; John de Saham, her tailor; John Oxenford; Thomas Leggy; Thomas Grosser; Maud de Grendersdon; Anabel de Saint John; and Simon de Croydon, among others. These payments were made for purchases of luxury items for the queen’s household, including textiles (silk, drapes of gold, robes), a pair of shoes, durable coats, surcoats, crockery, and spices (saffron). The quantities paid for these items are lost in the majority of the cases, as the right-hand margin of the roll has been cut.
Predominantly written in Middle French, but includes sporadic words in Middle English.
Another roll produced in Philippa of Hainault’s household is now Cotton MS Galba E III, ff. 174–192.
