CERTIFICATE on behalf of Richard Redman, Bishop of Exeter and afterwards (1501) of Ely by Thomas Gudibour, Prior of the Cathedral Church of Carlisle and parson of Sebergham, co. Cumb., and five others, that following the deaths of two generations of the Lowther family of Sebergham and Dalston, co. Cumb., the sole remaining representative, Christopher, grandson of Sir Robert Lowther and son of John Lowther, holds the title to the manors of ‘Welles’ and Garrington, etc., co. Kent; Shap, 8 Jan. 1498 [1499]. Sir Robert Lowther had issue Robert, Geoffrey and William, all deceased, William leaving a son John, also deceased, who had Christopher. Purchased from J. L. M. Gulley, May 1999.
Seven seal-tags with three surviving red wax seals, partly fragments. Contemporary docket reading ‘Testymoniall of the bushoppe of Exeter & others etc’. Old pressmark H. 7. 14.
