Heraldic Roll ('The Dering Roll')
- Scope & Content:
-
Parchment roll comprising four pieces of parchment, with 324 shields arranged in 54 rows of 6 each. (Membrane 1: shields 1 to 84; membrane 2: shields 85 to 168; membrane 3: shields 169 to 246; membrane 4: shields 247 to 324). The shields are painted in colours on a green background. Names are written above each shield in a contemporary hand except Nos. 23, 79, 212, 256, 307, where they have been omitted or erased. The arms are predominantly those of knights of Kent and Sussex, and include fifteen sheriffs of Kent and four constables of Dover Castle. The Dering Roll supplies a list of the knights owing feudal service to the constable of Dover Castle, and may have been commissioned by Stephen of Penchester, who served as Constable from 1268 to 1298. The shields in the last 6 rows (Nos. 289-324) belong to northern France and the Low Countries.
There are eleven later copies of the Dering Roll, described in Wagner, A Catalogue of English Mediaeval Rolls of Arms (1950), pp. 15-16, and listed in Brault, Rolls of Arms (1997), I. 143:

The 324 arms are identified in Brault, Rolls of Arms (1997), I. 145-68; Brault provides a description of each shield, including any variants in the later copies, as well as a transcription of the names that appear above each one. Brault's volume 2 provides a short biography for each of the knights identified. No. 1, for example, Richard FitzRoy de Douvres (d. 1253) was a son of King John; no. 2, William de Say of West Greenwich, Kent (d. 1295), was summoned to serve against the Welsh in 1277 and 1282; no. 6, Stephen de Penchester of Penshurst, Kent (d. 1298), was sheriff of Kent 1268-71, constable of Dover Castle 1268-98, and warden of the Cinque Ports, Kent 1274-98. Denholm-Young argues that the Dering Roll "is based upon a castle-guard roll made in the early years of Stephen de Penchester's term of office as Constable of Dover" (History and Heraldry (1965), p. 65). No. 271, Fulk FitzWarin of Whittington, Salop (d. 1315), was a descendant of the Fouke le Fitz Waryn of the Anglo-Norman romance of the same name, a fictionalized family history from the Conquest down to Fulk's grandfather; the Fulk of the roll was summoned to serve against the Welsh (1277 and 1282-83) and against the Scots (12898-99 and 1300-06).
