COLLECTIVE INDULGENCE issued by three archbishops and ten bishops in favour of the church of the order of the Holy Sepulchre, Hainault, Liège diocese. Dat. at Avignon, 7 June 1343. Latin. The modern portfolio in which the charter is kept was made by A. & M. Winstanley of Salisbury, and is in a style similar to those made for Eric George Millar (1887-1966), Keeper of Manuscripts at the British Museum, who may therefore have owned this charter at some time. Purchased from J. A. Stargardt of Marburg, Cat. 629 (1983), item 9.
Ten-line initial 'U' containing ink and coloured wash drawing showing, above, the Crucifixion, and below the Women at the Sepulchre, with, to the left, an Angel bearing a double cross and, to the right, a monk, with the symbol of a double cross on his cloak, praying. Coloured three-line initials in the first line of text. Slits for seal tags (now all missing). On decorated and collective indulgences, see further Analecta Bollandiana, XLIV-XLVI (1926-1928), passim; O. Homburger and C. von Steiger in Zeitschrift für Schweizerische Archälogie und Kunstgeschichte, XVII (1957), pp. 134-158; E. Donkin, 'A Collective Letter of Indulgence for an English Beneficiary', Scriptorium, XVII (1963), pp. 316-324; C. R. Cheney in Palaeographica Diplomatica et Archivistica: studi in onore di Giulio Battelli, II (1979), pp. 353-373. Other examples are Add. Ch. 25826, 25828 and 76773.
