Eleanor of Aquitaine (b. c. 1122, d. 1204), Duchess of Aquitaine and widowed Queen of England (the widow of King Henry II (r. 1154-1189)), grants a house in Poitiers to the abbey of Fontevraud (Fontevrault), France. The house is granted for the support of Roger, her chaplain, and his successors in the chapel of St Laurence, which was founded by Eleanor at Fontevraud.
Given at Poitiers, by the hand of Master Richard, clerk. Datable to 1199 according to the witness list, of persons gathered at Fontevraud on the occasion of the funeral of Eleanor's son, King Richard I of England (r. 1189-1199).
Witnessed by Maurice, Bishop of Poitiers (r. 1198-1214), and 19 others.
Endorsed: in a 13th-century hand, ‘pro Sancto Laurencio’, in a 14th-century hand, ‘S[anc]t[is]. Laurentius a porturo posuetis; an old reference, ‘10, f. 4, sac. 2’.
Eleanor was buried at Fontevraud Abbey after her death in 1204.
