INDENTURE of treaty of alliance between William [Bateman], Bishop of Norwich, Henry, Earl of Lancaster, Derby and Leicester, Lord of Begerac, and Steward of England, Robert de Ufford, [1st] Earl of Suffolk, Sir Walter Manny and Master John Carleton, Doctor of Laws, deputies of Edward [III], King of England, and Henri de Flandre, Seigneur de Menene [Menin], Sohier, Seigneur d'Enghien, and Jaqueme Metteneye, deputies of Louis, Count of Flanders, whereby Louis is to claim from "laduersaire de France" [Philip VI] before 1 Sept. next the county of Artois and the towns of Lille, Douai, Béthune and Orchies : and if he cannot peaceably enjoy the Counties of Nevers and Rethel, Edward is to pay him 40,000 crowns of gold yearly ; n.d.
