A detailed set of instructions from Margaret III (b. 1350, d. 1405), Dowager Duchess of Burgundy, to her commissioners, to make a trade treaty with England, including a list of rights and privileges to secure and when they should return to her for further instructions.
Given at Arras, 19 December 1404.
Inscribed with the name 'J. de Morel' inscribed at the join between the two membranes and at the end of the second membrane.
Affixed with Margaret's red oval seal, with a heraldic device of an angel on the right and two indistinct heraldic quarters on the left, within a quatre-foil panel, an eagle in each of the top corners, a lion in each of the bottom corners, and the fragmentary legend, ‘s marguerite de flandres et duc… bourgoinone’ (membrane 2).
Endorsed: in a 15th-century hand, 'Instruction depar madame sur le fait du traitie dentre Engletrre et Flandres pour le cours de la marchandise. xiiij'; in an 18th-century hand, 'Commerce, 1404 / Instruction donnée par Marguerite, duchesse douairière de Bourgogne / à ses députés pour traitter au / nom du roy et en son nom de / commerce avec l'Angleterre. A Arras le 19 décembre / 1404'; in a 19th-century hand, 'Phillips MS / 34916', with the lot number 702 (membrane 2d).
