Bull of Pope Adrian IV (r. 1154-1159), at the instance of the nuns of Neasham Priory (County Durham), confirming the foundation of the house and its possessions, listing and confirming previous donations to the priory, exempting the priory from tithes from the food for their animals or from the lands which it brought into cultivation, granting the right to bury anyone at the priory except excommunicates or those under interdict, placing the priory under papal protection, and threatening excommunication against any who violates this bull.
Given in the hand of Roland, cardinal and chancellor of the Church, at the Lateran, Rome, 3 February 1157.
With the signatures of Pope Adrian, 16 cardinals, and 3 bishops, including Cardinal Ubaldo Allucingoli, the future Pope Lucius III (r. 1181-1185), and Cardinal Giacinto Bobone, the future Celestine III (r. 1191-1198).
Affixed with a bulla of Adrian IV, oval, black, with the legend ‘s[anctus] pa[ulus] s[anctus] pe[trus]’. Reverse: ‘adrianus p[a]p[a] iiii’.
