Justin Martyr, Opera, entitled 'Βίβλος θεολογική, Theologicus Liber, Livre en Theologie. Θεῖα τοῦ ἁγίου Ἰουστίνου Μάρτυρος τεύχη. Divina Sancti Justini Martyris Opera'. The manuscript also contains a number of other short Greek texts, mainly imperial edicts. Corrections and marginal comments by the original scribe and by a second hand, possibly that of Jacques Sirmond.

Foliation: ff iv + 377. f i is the paste-down in the inside front cover. One unfoliated blank paper flyleaf at the beginning and two at the end.

Dimensions: 330 x 235 mm.

Ruling: 221 x 130 mm, 30 lines per page.

Binding: White leather.

Scribe: Γεώργιος Κόκολος (Repertorium 1A, no. 65): colophon dated 1541, f 359r: Θεοῦ τὸ δῶρον καὶ Γεωργίου πόνος ᾳφμα΄ μην(ὶ) ἀπριλλ(ίῳ) β΄. Identified with Γεώργιος Κόκολος (a copyist of Pellicier) by Bobichon (2003), p. 160.

Custodial History:

Origin: Italy, N. (Venice).

Provenance:

Created in Venice in 1541, probably at the request of Guillaume Pelicier (b. c. 1490, d. 1568), French prelate and diplomat: his catalogue, no. 29 (cf. Omont 1885); colophon, f 359r.

Claude Naulot of Avallon: acquired in 1573, along with the rest of Pelicier's private library: ownership inscriptions, f 1r, f 377v.

Jacques Sirmond (b. 1559, d. 1651), French scholar and Jesuit: marginalia and corrections in red ink attributed to him by le Nourry (1703).

Collège de Clermont, Paris: ownership inscription, f 1r: Coll. Paris. Soc. Jesu. Acquired by the Collège along with the rest of Naulot's library in the first half of the the 17th century, according to Omont (1885) p. 52.

Gerardus Meerman (b. 1722, d. 1771), Dutch book collector: purchased along with the rest of the library of the Collège de Clermont by in 1764: ownership inscription, f i recto, Meermanniana 57; see further Omont (1885), p. 52. Passed to his son Johan (b. 1753, d. 1815)

Sir Thomas Phillipps, baronet (1792-1872), collector of books and manuscripts: the manuscript was part of the large collection of Meermann's books and manuscripts purchased by Phillipps in 1824. Many of the items bought by Phillipps at this sale were given in error to other bidders and later repurchased by Phillipps: it is not clear whether this manuscript was acquired in 1824 or later. See Munby (1951-1960), III (1954), pp. 25-28, and the references listed in V (1960), p. 122, under MSS 3078-3087.

Deposited as Loan MS 36/13 with the British Museum in 1949 by A. G. Fenwick and the Trustees of the Fenwick Settlement.
