- This fonds contains digital surrogates of a selection of records accumulated by the District Officer of Calabar Division in the course of inspecting the actions of Native Courts and administering the taxation regime in the Division. Two files have been selected: the first contains papers concerning a petition submitted to a Native Court; the second contains petitions, appeals and supplications concerning tax assessment.

- Administrative Context:
- EAP052 Rescuing Eastern Nigerian history: preserving the holdings of Enugu and Calabar regional archives was funded by the Endangered Archives Programme. The records gathered here were created and accumulated by the District Officer and Assistant District Officer of Calabar District in the execution of their duties. These are described in Lugard's Political Memoranda [1918]: "Each Divisional Officer will tour constantly in his division hearing complaints, recording statistics, inspecting Native Courts, checking native agents, surveying, and assessing, and supervising the collection of taxes where these are imposed."
