- This fonds contains digital surrogates of a selection of the Assessment and Re-Assessment Reports and associated correspondence accumulated by the Office of the Secretary of the Northern Provinces in Nigeria in the course of its administrative business. Assessment Reports were compiled annually by the Residents who administered the Provinces, and were submitted to the Lieutenant Governor through the office of the Secretary. The Secretary would also distribute sections of the Assessment to relevant local departments for comment and implementation. The reports contain a wealth of information about various districts in the Kano emirate, including anthropological and historical accounts of pre-colonial practices and systems in parts of the emirate.

The original files were accumulated by the Office of the Secretary of the Northern Provinces, before deposit at the National Archives of Nigeria, and subsequent transfer of surrogates to the Kano State History and Culture Bureau .

The Secretary would also distribute sections of the Assessment to relevant local departments for comment and implementation.
