- Digital surrogates of a selection of records from the Administrative Office of Kano Province, Northern Nigeria. The Province was under the charge of the Resident, who reported to the Lieutenant-Governor through the Secretary for the Northern Provinces. The records digitised here reflect the administrative duties of the Provincial and Divisional staff, and consist of Assessment and Re-assessment reports, histories and intelligence reports for Divisions, Districts and Towns, and papers relating to the administration of Native Courts. Most of the files include correspondence and memoranda between District Officers, the Resident, the Secretary of the Northern Provinces, and other local Government administrators.

- Digital surrogates in this collection were created as part of the project EAP087. The original files were accumulated by the Kano Province Office, before deposit at the National Archives of Nigeria, and subsequent transfer of surrogates to the Kano State History and Culture Bureau. In 1952 several files were removed from the archive and sent to the newly constituted Ministry of Local Government under the understanding that they might have renewed relevance as current files; these were subsequently returned to the National Archives and given a reference indicating their position within the records of the Ministry of Local Government. These records bear the reference MLG.

- Arrangement:
- The material digitised here most likely originates from the Series 2-7, 'General Correspondence of the Provincial Office' maintained by National Archives Kaduna. Due to uncertainty about their arrangement and designation, the Series divisions have not been maintained in this catalogue; however, the original National Archives' references have been recorded in the Former External Reference field.
- Administrative Context:
- EAP087 was funded by the Endangered Archives Programme. The Assessment Reports, related correspondence and Native Administration papers which constitute this fonds were accumulated by the Kano Provincial Office, Nigeria in the execution of its administrative duties. Assessment Reports were compiled annually by the Residents who administered the Provinces, and were submitted to the Lieutenant Governor through the office of the Secretary. These reports made use of Assessment and Re-assessment reports compiled for District areas by District Officers. Residents also had responsibility to supervise the Native Courts and the assessment of taxation.
