Papers, mainly dated 1842-77, with some later family papers up to 1953, of Surgeon-General Sir Colvin Colvin-Smith (1829-1913), Madras Medical Service 1851-84; Principal Medical Officer of the Indian Contingent, Egyptian Campaign 1882; chiefly discussing family matters.
The collection consists largely of Sir Colvin's correspondence with his wife Marian (nee Phillips), and his father, Rev Robert Smith, of Aberdeen, and other members of his family. These letters, while mainly discussing purely family concerns, do touch on Sir Colvin's career in India and include a description of the battle of Tel-el-Kebir.
