Purchased by the Record Department of the India Office from Messrs Francis Edwards Ltd, Marylebone, in 1928. Originally, these papers would have been created as part of Henry Dundas's work at the Board of Control, but would have been deemed by him to be 'personal papers' and removed from the Board of Control when he left office. They then formed part of the family papers of the Dundas family. The papers of Henry Dundas and Robert Dundas, Lords Melville, were sold at auction at Sotheby's by Violet, Viscountess Melville, in a number of sales in the 1920s. Many items relating to India were sold on 23 February 1927, with many lots being purchased by dealers. Francis Edwards Ltd, 83 High Street, Marylebone, London, published a catalogue of items for sale in May 1928, 'The Melville Papers Original Letters and Documents Relating to the East But Mainly Concerning Bombay, Madras and Mysore 1780 to 1815. From the Collection of Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville'. The Record Department of the India Office purchased a number of items from this catalogue. These items were original catalogues nos. 7, 22, 27, 35a, 40, 43, 46, 48 & 85. They were then catalogued as IOR/H/818 Melville Papers, together with items that now make up Mss Eur G92.
