- Letters, dated 8-24 Sep 1781, from Warren Hastings (1732-1818), Governor of Bengal 1772-74 and Governor-General 1774-85, and his private secretary George Nesbitt Thompson (1753-1831), to Col James Morton (1739-1808), Bengal Army 1759-85, about measures against Raja Chait Singh; also letter, dated 29 Aug 1781, from Hastings to Col Grainger Muir (1733- 86), Bengal Army 1754-84, empowering him to negotiate with Sindhia. The letters were written from the fort of Chunar where Hastings was besieged by Chait Singh. They are on long thin slips of paper, which were rolled up, inserted into quills, and hidden about the persons of Indian bearers who smuggled them out.
