Moorsom Collection: letters, papers, diaries, notebooks, drawings and photographs of Capt William Robert Moorsom (1834-58), British Army 1852-58, ADC and Deputy Assistant Q.M.G. to Sir Henry Havelock, including material relating to the siege and relief of Lucknow; also papers of and relating to other members of the Moorsom family.
The Moorsom papers passed by inheritance to the Longmore family, through the marriage of Rosalie Moorsom to Inspector General Sir Thomas Longmore in 1862. Rosalie Moorsom was the daughter of Captain William Scarth Moorsom (1804-63), railway engineer and author of a history of the 52nd Regiment, and the grand-daughter of Admiral Sir Robert Moorsom (d.1835). The papers were afterwards inherited by Sir Thomas grandson Mr. T.R.W. Longmore who deposited them on a permanent loan with the India Office Library in 1968.
The Moorsoms were also connected by marriage with the Wilkins family of Nova Scotia, Canada, through whom they inherited a claim to land in Nova Scotia. This is the subject of much correspondence in these papers and in those of Sir Thomas Longmore, deposited in the Library of the Royal Army Medical College, Millbank, London S.W. 1.
The Moorsom Collection consists of papers of Captain William Robert Moorsom (1834-58), ADC and Deputy Assistant Q.M.G. to Sir Henry Havelock and Q.M.G. to Sir James Outram, including his survey of Lucknow, and material relating to the siege and relief of Lucknow, where he was killed in 1858; the Collection also consists of papers relating to other members of the Moorsom family.
