Papers of Maj William Croker (1825-87), British Army 1845-68, and other members of his family, including journals, sketches of Tibet, photographs with technical notes, and documents concerning the Crokers' interest in the Baijnath Tea Estate, Kangra Valley, Punjab.
Material of photographic interest includes a 16pp. manuscript entitled Notes on Photographic Trials Commenced April 1859, detailing his experiments with various photographic processes, as well as noting a visit to Felice Beato ('We went to see Signor Beato and got the albumenised paper process from him as follows...'). The papers include a collection of 40 loose albumen prints, some mounted on card. This material can be broken down as follows:
Prints 1-7. Miscellaneous Indian views, 1858-60s, by commercial photographers (Felice Beato, Samuel Bourne, W. Baker).
Print 8. View of (?)Srinagar by an unknown photographer, 1860s.
Prints 9-15. Views of tea estates and tea estate buildings at Baijnath and Sumali, 1860s. Photographer unknown, apart from print 15, by William Croker.
