- Title:
- WIMBERLEY DIARIES: Diaries of Mary Wimberley, wife of Rev Charles Wimberley, Chaplain, Bengal Ecclesiastical Establishment
- Scope & Content:
-
Diaries of Mary Wimberley (1796-1887), wife of Rev Charles Wimberley (1800-76), Chaplain, Bengal Ecclesiatical Establishment 1825-41; with transcript made by Maj-Gen Douglas Neil Wimberley.
Mary Irvine (1796-1887) of Aberdeen married the Rev. Charles Wimberley (1800-76) in June 1825, and they sailed for India a month later, for Charles has been appointed a chaplain on the Bengal Establishment; they remained in India until 1841. The diaries are by Mary Wimberley, with a few entries by Charles. Some volumes of the diary are missing (Jan 1828-Aug 1831, 1833-34, 1836), but the remainder give a lively picture of the Wimberleys life in Northern India, and of the various stations in which Wimberley officiated as chaplain, viz. Allahabad, Patna and various places in or near Calcutta (Howrah, Chinsurah, Fort William and Barrackpur). Wimberley accompanied the Governor-General (Lord Auckland) on his tour of the Upper Provinces 1837-38, and describes Auckland s meeting with Maharaja Ranjit Singh at Ferozepore in November 1838.
