This is a composite volume including:
Three original letters from the Nawab of Arcot to George III, the Earl of Shelburne and Lord North, complaining of the conduct of Lord Macartney as Governor of Madras. Was J780.
Deed executed by George Augustus Francis Rawdon-Hastings, 2nd Marquess of Hastings, and his mother Lady Hastings, releasing the trustees in respect of a grant of £20,000 made by the East India Company in 1827, in consideration of the services of his father, to enable him to take possession of the paternal mansion when he came of age. Was J827.
Typescript extract from a letter, dated 5 Mar 1846, written by Lt (later Col) Hugh Lowman Pester, Bengal Army 1840-74, giving an account of operations during the 1st Sikh War since 11 Dec 1845. Was J831.
Two letters from J J Walker, British Consular Service, Fuh Chow, China, to Sir George Thomas Staunton, 2nd Bart (1781-1859), East India Company servant, Canton 1798-1817, writer on China, with Walker's replies to a questionnaire from Staunton, discussing inter alia Anglo-Chinese relations, the opium trade, and the disastrous effects of opium on the Chinese. Two impressions, one red, one black, once belonging to John Gilbert, Engineer to the Calcutta Mint, of designs for proposed half anna Indian postage stamp, evidently taken from an existing design for Indian coins by John Flaxman (1755-1826). Cf F Pridmore, `Coins of the British Commonwealth', pt 4 vol 2, pp 5-6, 23-4, 44-5. Was J838.
Letter, dated 12 Jun 1857, from Capt Edmund Charles Vibart (1825-57), Bengal Army 1842-57, giving news of the Indian Mutiny; also copy (1867) of verses written by him as a boy in 1841. See also daguerreotype thought to be of Vibart (P&D: Photo 138). Was J839.
Fifteen letters to Maj (later Lt-Gen Sir) Frederick Lance (1837-1913), Bengal Army, from George Elias Farrell (1831-99), Bengal Medical Service 1856-93, and others, relating chiefly to the 2nd Afghan War. Was J841.
