- Title:
- Letters of John Atkinson Blanshard and Harriet Blanshard to Mrs Bettie Browne
- Scope & Content:
-
Letters from John Atkinson Blanshard (1747-1806), captain of the York and Rockingham East Indiamen, and Mrs Harriet Blanshard (1745-1822) to Mrs Bettie Browne, widow of John Browne, Secretary to the Masons’ Grand Lodge at York.
Captain Blanshard was the guardian of the two sons of Mrs Browne. He accepted her younger son John as ‘extra Midshipman’ on the Rockingham and through his intervention, her elder son Mackley became a ship-owner in later years.
Mrs Harriet Blanshard (nee Gale), granddaughter of the antiquary Roger Gale of Scruton, and daughter of Roger Henry Gale, a Fellow Commoner of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. She is the subject of a portrait by George Romney (1734-1802).
The collection comprises nineteen letters: twelve from Mrs Harriet Blanshard and seven from her husband, mostly written from Walworth, reporting the well-being of two boys of Browne, describing the voyages to the East on board Rockingham, the day-to-day life of their family in England. Latter part of the letters coincides with the event of the French Revolution while Mrs Browne’s son was in France.
Includes a piece of wrapper in marbled paper on which is written by Mrs Browne’s son: ‘Letters from Captn. & Mrs. Blanshard to Mother’, with the initials ‘J[ohn] M[ackley] B[rowne]’, dated ‘Nov 16th 1791 Wednesday’.
