Book of butterfly and moth paintings by Elizabeth Dennis Denyer (1765/6-1824), based on specimens collected mostly in the environs of London and housed in the collection of William Jones of Chelsea (1745-1818).
The paintings are preceded by notes and an index (ff. 1r-7r) that lists the specimens by their Latin and English names, their food as caterpillars, the frequency of breeding (number of broods per year), how they pass the winter, time of year they fly (appear on the wing), and their haunts in the winged state.
The manuscript contains representations of 88 specimens, each shown with the wings open and closed; and one representation of the artist's parents. The butterflies (all then considered to belong to the genus Papilio) are listed as:
