- The collection consists of the papers of several interrelated individuals of the Gwatkin family, including correspondence, memorandums, maps, photographs and other papers, dated c.1850-1950 focusing on the Indian Army with the exception of Sir Willowghby Gwatkin's papers, which include material relating to his military career in Canada as Chief Staff Officer of the Canadian Militia. The majority of the papers date for approximately the last 100 years of British rule in India and are particularly strong for the period when Sir Frederick Gwatkin (1885-1969) served as Military Adviser in Chief to the Indian State Forces, 1939-43.
