- The archives were created by the administration of the Central Province. They were transferred to the National Archives of Ghana, established in 1946. Custodiaship passed on to the Public Records and Archives Administration Department (PRAAD) which was created in 1996. The PRAAD is currently the custodian of the archives.

- Arrangement:
- The archives are arranged according to provenance and original order. They are arranged by Group, class and item (files) according to ISD standards. The codes of the broad or general groups which contain sub-groups at PRAAD, Cape Coast bear the following codes: ADM for administrative records (pre-colonial and colonial), RG for post-colonial records, EC for Ecclestistical records, SC for Special Collections (private papers etc.), SCT for court records regadless of the period. The classes cover the various divisions in the group while the items describe the files in the class. The group codes are in letters while those of class and item are in digits.
