Materials: palm leaf manuscript (bai lan).
Dimensions: 540 mm x 48 mm.
Script: 5 lines per leaf, Northern Thai Tham script.
Binding: Plain wooden covers on the manuscript, with two additional wooden covers with some black lacquer and gold leaf. Two bamboo sticks that were formerly used to hold the leaves together, and nine cords that were formery used to hold the leaves together: one made from natural coloured cotton (430 mm long), one made from light brown coloured cotton (530 mm long), one made from red coloured cotton with human hair woven in (670 mm long), and six made from natural coloured cotton with human hair woven in (745 mm, 680 mm, 685 mm, 725 mm, 692 mm, 610 mm).
- Custodial History:
- Purchased from Carl Bock Esq and accessioned into the British Museum collections on 22 Nov 1882. Carl Alfred Bock (1849-1932) was a natural scientist and traveller. Son of a merchant, brought up and educated in Oslo. After bird- and data collecting expeditions in Indonesia, he went on an expedition to Thailand (then Siam) and what is now northern Thailand in 1881-2, including visits to the towns of Bangkok and Ayutthaya in central Thailand, Raheng (Tak) in the west, and in the north, Lamphun, Lakhon (Lampang), Chiangmai, Fang, Kiang Hai (Chiang Rai), and Kiang Tsen (Chiang Saen).
