The material in this collection includes manuscripts, typed paper documents and photographs from the Notaria Única de Buenaventura in Valle del Cauca from 1743 to 1935. This includes personal and legal correspondence, claims, wills, marriages and sales in New Granada. As the economy of New Granada was based on mining fueled by slaves, these documents contain abundant information related to the slave trade, sales and manumission in the nineteenth century. After emancipation, there are various legal documents related to the establishment and development of the Departamento de Valle del Cauca.
