Title:: Material relating to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania in Moshi, Tanzania
Scope & Content:: Following the creation of the German protectorate in 1885, German missionary societies established themselves in different parts of Tanzania. The Leipzig Mission founded its first station on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in 1893. By 1939 half of the (predominantly peasant) Chagga population had been converted; today most people are Christians. Although German rule ended in 1919, German missionaries returned in 1926, including a leading figure in German anthropology and mission history - Bruno Gutmann (1876-1966). In 1963 the mission church became the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania in Northern Tanganyika [later: Tanzania], consisting of 5 dioceses: Northern, Pare, Arusha, Meru and Central. The archive of this church in the small town of Moshi in the centre of the Northern Diocese houses records which extend back to 1895. Some are in English, others in German or Swahili. Most researchers studying the history or anthropology of northeastern Tanzania visit this archive, although the conditions for research are far from ideal. The material, produced by missionaries and subsequently by African converts, falls into seven categories, of which the first is the most important in terms of quantity: church registers (births, baptisms, communion, catechists, marriages, funerals); mission council records; education records; diaries; files on individual missionaries, notably Bruno Gutmann, and on African teachers, pastors and evangelists; photographs; first prints of hymnals and portions of the Bible in African languages.

Arrangement:: This collection has been divided into five sub-fonds: the first relates to the church books and is then subsequently divided into the various parishes. The other sub-fonds relate to the location or type of documents at Moshi: boxes, drawer documents, pile, photographs; these are often sub-divided by parish.
Administrative Context:: EAP099 was funded by the Endangered Archives Programme. It created digital copies of records held by the of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania in Moshi, Tanzania. The project was designed to preserve the earliest records of the ELCT's Northern Diocese Archive concerning the first missionaries sent by the Leipzig Mission from Germany to the Kilimanjaro region between the late 1890s and 1930. Within just under a year, by means of scanning and digital photography our German-Tanzanian working group was able to copy altogether 20,744 pages on 98 DVDs. These consist mainly of correspondence, mission station diaries, church registers and cash books as well as a few photographs. Some of this material is from Moshi itself; and most of the remainder was originally in other parts of the Northern Diocese but has now been transferred to the Moshi archive. We have included a limited amount of material from Shigatini (in Pare Diocese) and Makumira Theological College, photographed in situ. Mater copies of the digitised documents have been given to the Tanzanian National Archives in Dar es Salaam, while additional copies have beeen deposited in Moshi itself, in the British Library in London, and at the University of Leipzig. After completion of the project a further 4,062 pages were digitised by a new team from Leipzig in August-September 2007. A third team addes 1,572 pages in March 2008, bringing the total to 26,378 pages. Lists of the holdings of the Moshi archive appeared in Adam Jones et al., Afrikabestände in Ev.-Luth. Missionsarchiven: Leipzig und Moshi (Mission Archives Series No.9 2000) and Monika Rammelt, Guide to the ELCT Northern Diocese ARchive in Moshi, Tanzania 1906-1993 (Mission Archives Series No.26, 2005). Also relevant are the editions of primary sources by Klaus-Peter Kiesel, which have appeared in the ULPA 'History and Culture Series': Arno Krause, Tagebuch der Mssionsstation Nkoaranga (Tanzania) 1902-1905 (No. 11, 2004) and Kindheit und Bekehrung in Nord-Tansania: Aurfsätze von Afrikanern aus dem ehemaligen Deutsch-Ostafrika (Tanzania) vom Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts (Nos. 12 and 13, 2005 and 2007).
