- Title:
- Inspeximus by Henry III of a grant of Aethelred the Unready to Wherwell Abbey
- Scope & Content:
-
Inspection and confirmation by King Henry III of England (r. 1216-1272) of a charter of King Aethelred the Unready (r. 978-1016) for Abbess Heanflaed and Wherwell Abbey (Hampshire), issued before 23 April 1002; given at Westminster, 26 October 1260.
The preamble states that the original is now unreadable and damaged. In the original document, Aethelred granted privileges and lands at Dean (Sussex), once held by his mother, Queen Aelfthryth, to Abbess Heanflaed and Wherwell Abbey .
The document is the first full recital in an inspeximus of a pre-Conquest charter by a post-Conquest king (an inspeximus is a grant which confirms an earlier charter by reciting the whole text). The original charter does not survive, but an inferior copy is found in the 14th-century cartulary of Wherwell Abbey (Egerton MS 2104A, ff. 15r–16r).
Endorsed: in a 17th-century hand, ‘Exemplification et confirmario de [illegible] / fact[o] moniales de Wherwell’; in an 18th-century hand, ‘An exemplification [illegible] the monastery / of Wherwell’.
A substantial fragment of the impression of the Second Great Seal of Henry III, oval, green, with Henry enthroned before Westminster Abbey, is attached by silk cords to the document.
