Correspondence of Richard Campbell Bazett (1766-1832), East India agent and merchant

Richard Campbell Bazett (1766-1832), born in St Helena in 1766, went to India in 1788 becoming an East India agent. In 1789, he began a partnership with Bruce de Ponthieu & Bazett, at London EC2, 1805-1815. From 1816, he formed a new partnership Bazett, Farquar & Crawford at India House, London EC2, and then Bazett, Colvins, Crawford & co. 1816-1821. He was a great friend of Sir William Webber Doveton, Governor of St Helena, who befriended Emperor Napolean on his exile in 1815. He was Chairman on a Select Committee to the House of Commons, on the affairs of the East India Company 1812-1813 and 1831-1832 which resulted in the East India Charter Acts 1813 and 1833.
The six volumes of correspondence spanning from 1803 to 1832 comprise copies of letters mainly from Bazett to his business partners and government officials on day to day business transactions and other matters concerning contemporary British politics, and regional news of other parts of the world. Including correspondence with British politicians such as Sir John Malcolm, Sir Harford Jones Brydges, and Sir Mountstuard Elphinstone among others. All volumes include index.
