- Title:
- Notarial copy of the negotiations for the marriage of Prince Edward of England (the future King Edward II) and Philippa, daughter of Count Guy of Flanders, 31 October 1299
- Scope & Content:
-
Peteghem Castle, Flanders: 31 October 1299
In 1294, negotiations began for the marriage of Prince Edward of England and Philippa, daughter of Count Guy of Flanders. Agreement was reached in 1297, by which time Philippa had been taken into French custody. The Anglo-Flemish marriage agreement was annulled by Pope Boniface VIII in 1298. Edward was subsequently betrothed to Isabella, daughter of King Philip IV of France.
Anthony Bek, bishop of Durham, was entrusted with the Anglo-Flemish marriage negotiations in 1294. The present document was drawn up by the notary Symon Pauli of Courtrai for Count Guy of Flanders in 1299, after the marriage agreement had been annulled. It describes the promises made by Anthony Bek in 1294, and demonstrates that William de Valence, earl of Pembroke, had already agreed to the marriage in writing.
The marriage negotiations are known from four documentary sources:
1. the instructions of King Edward I to Anthony Bek, 20 June 1294 (printed in Rymer’s Fœdera, I.ii.803, ‘Ex Litt. & Autogr. Edw. I. in Turr. Lond.’)
2. the promises made by Anthony Bek to Count Guy on 31 August 1294 (the present document, unedited)
3. the marriage agreement, 2 February 1297 (printed in Rymer’s Fœdera, I.ii.856, from London, The National Archives, E 30/27)
4. the annulment of the marriage agreement by Boniface VIII, 30 June 1298 (London, The National Archives, SC 7/7/19)
