In 1549, John Ponet published a treatise in favour of clerical marriage, entitled A Defence for Mariage of Priestes, by Scripture and aunciente wryters. Add. 89067 is Ponet’s personal copy of Stephen Gardiner’s refutation of his treatise, published in 1554 under the name of Thomas Martin. Ponet received the book in sheets and had it interleaved and bound with very wide margins. The book is profusely annotated, both in the margins on 258 pages and on 266 of the additional leaves. These annotations were Ponet’s working notes and draft passages for both his own reply to Gardiner and Martin, published in 1555 (with a corrected edition in 1556) as An Apologie fully answeringe by Scriptures and aunceant Doctors, a blasphemose Book gathered by D. Steph. Gardiner … and other Papists … under the name of Thomas Martin Doctor of the Civile lawes … against the godly mariadge of priests, and for the planned second part of the Apologie which was never written as Ponet died in 1556 before he could complete his work.
