Note in English on Fol. 1: ‘This manuscript was procured at Rangoon by Mr Stewart the medical officer attached to Mr Crawfurd’s Mission. It is said to be written in the Talien (or Pegu) language of which Mr Stewart could obtain an explanation. GS 14th March 1827’. It was presented to the Royal Society of Edinburgh by George Swinton in 1827. Crawfurd (Resident ofSingapore 1823-6) was sent on an envoy mission to Burma by Lord Amherst (Governor-General of India) in 1827 inorder to reach a trade agreement with King Bagyadaw at Ava. George Swinton was a Scottish civil servant who served as Chief Secretary to the Britishgovernment in India from 1827 to 1833.
