Kitāb al-furūsīyah wa-shiyāt al-khayl
Ibn Akhī Ḥizām, Muḥammad ibn Yaʻqūb
- Scope & Content:
-
One of the earliest Arabic texts on veterinary medicine, the treatise on hippiatrics, was written by Abū Yūsuf Yaʿqūb Ibn Akhī Ḥizām (أبو يوسف بن يعقوب بن أخي حزام, see title page, f. 2r), horse trainer of the Abbasid caliph al-Mu‘taḍid (المعتضد, reg. 892-902). The treatise is more commonly known as Kitāb al-furūsīyah wa-l-bayṭarah (كتاب الفروسية والبيطرة) or Kitāb al-khayl wa-l-bayṭarah (كتاب الخيل والبيطرة).
The text is divided into numerous short chapters (أبواب). Folios 46v-47r, 67v-68r and 95v-96r have been left blank.
Title page (f. 2r):
An abridged version of this text is found attributed to Abū Muḥammad Aḥmad ibn ‘Atīq al-Azdī (أبو محمد أحمد بن عتيق الأزدي) in British Library MS Or. 1523. The two manuscripts have been collated, and folio references to corresponding passages in Or. 1523 are noted in the margins of the present manuscript.
Begins (f. 2v, lines 2-7):
Ends (f. 173r, lines 10-14):
Colophon (f. 173r, line 15):
