Prayer book of Psalms and prayers in English, probably made for Anne Seymour [née Stanhope] (b. c. 1497, d. 1587), Countess of Hertford and later Duchess of Somerset. The manuscript contains a selection of prayers from Richard Taverner’s translation from the Latin of Wolfgang Capito’s Precationes Christianæ ad imitationem psalmorum co[m]positæ, printed as An epitome of the Psalmes, or briefe meditacons vpon the same, with diuerse other moste Christian prayers, translated by Richard Taverner (London, 1539).
Decoration:
The manuscript has an illuminated frontispiece of the marital arms of Edward Seymour, Earl of Hertford (created 1st Duke of Somerset, and Lord Protector in 1547) and his second wife, Lady Anne Stanhope, with the Seymour family motto ‘Foy pour Devoir’ (f. 2v).
The Lord’s Prayer is written in gold on f. 3r and the rubrics are written in gold throughout.
Each page is decorated with a full-page border in colours and gold. Small illuminated initials in colours and gold mark the beginning of each prayer and Psalm.
Two pages bear the initials ‘A’ and ‘E’ in the borders (f. 20v, f. 32r).

Foliation: ff. 1-42 (+ 1 unfoliated paper flyleaf at the beginning; f. 42 is a modern paper flyleaf).
Binding: Late 17th-century British (probably London) red goatskin binding tooled in gold to a panel design, with acorn and flower motifs.

Provenance:
Anne Seymour [née Stanhope] (b. c. 1497, d. 1587), Countess of Hertford and later Duchess of Somerset: the manuscript was most likely made for and owned by Anne Seymour.
Alexander Aeneas Mackintosh (b. 1847, d. 1875), 27th Chief of Clan Mackintosh: passed by descent through the Seymour family and in 1875 into the Mackintosh family with the marriage of Alexander Aeneas Mackintosh to Margaret Frances Graham (d. 1927), daughter of Sir Frederick Ulric Graham (b. 1820, d. 1888) and Lady Jane Hermione Seymour (d. 1909), daughter of the 12th Duke of Somerset.
Purchased by the British Library in March 2012.
