Papers of Beatrice Irene Magraw (née May; 1888- 1970s), wife of Charles Magraw, an Anglican clergyman and duputy headmaster of Bishop Cotton School in Simla, India, 1920-1922.
- Scope & Content:
-
Magraw was a writer of poetry, articles and history books for children. She also wrote history programmes for children for the BBC. She taught for the WEA and at Bishop Cotton School in Simla, India, where her husband was deputy headmaster 1920-1922. Many of her letters home from India for this period survive as do several photographs and other items. There are several files of her correspondence with her publishers. She was very keen on family history, especially of the May family, as well as collecting autographs. These interests are reflected in the archive.
BI Magraw’s husband, The Revd Charles Magraw (d 1976?) on returning from India became the incumbent of various parishes in Sussex and Kent, including being appointed Master of the Eastbridge Hospital in Canterbury. When he retired they moved to Hillside, Batcombe, Somerset.
The collection mainly consists of letters from Beatrice Irene Magraw to her mother Clementina May, her sisters Pheobe and Molly during her period in India as a teacher in Bishop Cotton School in Simla:
Mss Eur F684/1: Nov 1919 - Dec 1920.
Mss Eur F684/2: Jan - Dec 1921. Includes two letters from other persons and fragments of undated letters.
