- Title:
- MAJOR JOHN CARTWRIGHT (b. 1740, d. 1824), political reformer: letters to his sister Catherine Cartwright and his nephew Edmund Cartwright.
- Scope & Content:
- Most of the early letters are written from Plymouth and Portsmouth during Cartwright’s naval service. A letter of 23 December 1768 refers to Mikak, an Inuit woman captured by British sailors in Labrador and brought to London. A letter of 6 January 1773 mentions another group of Inuit brought to London by John’s elder brother, Captain George Cartwright (b. 1739, d. 1819), author of A Journal of Transactions and Events during a Residence of nearly Sixteen Years on the Coast of Labrador (London, 1792). Two of the letters to Edmund Cartwright are printed in part in F.D. Cartwright, The Life and Correspondence of Major Cartwright (London, 1826), vol. 1, pp 262-5, 267-9.
