- Title:
- Album Amicorum of P. Garforth
- Scope & Content:
-
Autograph album with signed verse and prose inscriptions by friends, possibly fellow students, of P. Garforth. Garforth himself has not been identified but may have connections with the Yorkshire family of that name. He was apparently in Hamburg, where most of the entries are dated, between 1781 and 1784, possibly studying at the Handelsakademie since the album contains contributions from two members of the staff. Other signatories temporarily in Hamburg are associated with places in England, Scotland and Ireland, as well as various German states, Switzerland, Sweden and France. There are many blank leaves, and the entries are not in date order, but there is a concentration of entries in August 1782, and a noticable gap in 1783 with only one entry (f. 11, from Skipton), suggesting that Garforth may have returned to England for a period.
Notable signatories are Nathaniel Sneyd from Dublin (f. 6) who might be identical with the later Irish and Westminster M.P.; G. P. H. Norrmann, Governor of the Commercial Academy at Hamburg (f. 28) who writes in English with a quotation from Pope's Essay on Man; and C[hristoph] D[aniel] Ebeling, writer and musician, here Second Director of the Commercial Academy but afterwards Librarian of the Hamburg Staatsbibliothek (f. 42v). L. Hoffmann geb. Eberling (f. 8) may be his daughter or sister.
