Scope & Content:

The Memoirs of the Mughal Emperor Babur (r.1526-30), originally written in Chaghatai Turkish and translated into Persian at his grandson Akbar’s request by Mīrzā ʻAbd al-Raḥīm Khān in 1589. This imperial copy, containing 143 illustrations mostly by attributed artists, was completed c.1590-93. Detached folios from this manuscript are also preserved at the V&A and other museums.

The text is arranged in 4 parts:

  • Years 899/1494 to 908/1502-3 (ff.1-156r)
  • Years 910/1504-5 to 914/1508-9 (ff.156v-296v)
  • Years 925/1519 to 926/1519-20 (ff.297r-348r)
  • Years 932/1525-26 to 936/1529-30 (ff.348v-528v)

Belonged to Henry Gee Boldero Barnard, of Cave Castle in Yorkshire (his circular crest on end paper of vol 4) and inherited by his wife’s nephew, Charles Edward Gee Boldero Barnard
