- Scope & Content:
- Saʻdī’s Būstān illustrated with ten miniatures, Mughal period. Bound in painted and glazed covers depicting flowers and birds (outside) and animals and mythical beasts (inside). Dated at Agra, 26 Rabīʻ I 1039 (13 November 1629). Copied in large elegant nastaʻliq by the well-known physician and poet Ḥakīm Rukn al-Dīn Masʻūd, known as Ḥakīm Ruknā, who went to India in the reign of Akbar and became one of Shah Jahan’s favourite poets. Margins decorated in gold with animals, plants, birds etc on different coloured backgrounds.

Script: Nastaʻliq in two columns, 12 lines to a page; the scribe is Ḥakīm Rukn al-Dīn Masʻūd, known as Ḥakīm Ruknā (see colophon on f. 175r)
Decoration: Includes ten miniatures, Mughal period, which appear to be by four different artists: ff. 37r, 40r, 52r, 59v, 67v, 129r, 145r, 152r, 162v, 168v.

- Purchased at Kermanshah in 1810 by Sir John Malcolm (1769-1833) from a prince of the Zand dynasty “whose eyes had been put out & who wandered as a mendicant over the country his ancestors & relations had so long governed” (f.1r)

- Purchased by the British Museum 9 December 1865 from General George A. Malcolm, Sir John's son
