-
Albrecht Dürer (b. 1471, d. 1528), artist: sketches and notes by his hand.
(According to Conway (Literary Remains (1889), p. 168), the five volumes of Dürer drawings (Add MS 5218, 5228-5231) may have belonged to Wilibald Pirckheimer (b. 1470, d. 1530), Dürer's patron, before being passed to the Imhof family and then to the Earl of Arundel. 'Some thirty or forty years ago,' Conway noted, 'a letter was found in the Record Office, which contained an account of the origin of the volumes; but the letter was not copied, or, if copied, both copy and reference were lost.')
Sir Hans Sloane (b. 1660, d. 1753), baronet, physician and collector. Purchased as part of the Sloane collection from Sloane's executors and incorporated into the newly founded British Museum in 1753.
