Sayr al-sālikīn ilā ‘ibādat rabb al-‘ālamīn, by Abdul Samad of Palembang (‘Abd al-Ṣamad al-Falimbānī, ca. 1704-1789) is an abridged Malay translation of the Arabic work Iḥyāʾ ʿulūm al-dīn, ‘The Revival of Religious Sciences’, by Abū Ḥāmid Muḥammad al-Ghazālī (ca. 1058-1111).
Sayr al-sālikīn consists of four parts (bahagi), each comprising ten chapters (bab): 1, Pada menyatakan ilmu usuluddin, on prescriptions for ritual purity, prayer, charity, fasting, pilgrimage, recitation of the Qur’an, and so forth, was started in 1779 and completed in Mecca in 1780; 2, Pada menyatakan adat, on manners related to eating, marriage, earning a living, friendship and other societal matters, was finished in Taif in Ramadan 1195 (August-September 1781); 3, Pada menyatakan muhlikat yakni yang membinasakan, discusses the destructive impact of vices, and was completed in Mecca on 19 Safar 1197 (24 January 1783); 4, Pada menyatakan munjiyat yakni yang melepaskan dari pada yang membinasakan akan agama ini, focusses on virtues which overcome threats to faith, and was completed on 20 Ramadhan 1203 (14 June 1789).
This MS of Sayr al-sālikīn contains only the final two-thirds of Part 3, beginning in the middle of Bab 3, pada menyatakan memecahkan syahwat, on the crushing of the two desires.

f. 7r: Bab 4, pada menyatakan kebinasaan lidah, on the damaging power of the tongue
f. 25r: Bab 5, pada menyatakan kebinasaan memarah dan kebinasaan orang yang berseteru dan orang yang bersakitan hati akan seorang dan kebinasaan berdengki2ian dengan seorang, on the damaging power of anger, and of enmity, and of bearing grudges against people
f. 34v: Bab 6, pada menyatakan kecelaan dunia, a condemnation of worldly ways
f. 41v, Bab 7, pada menyatakan kecelaan orang yang kasih akan arta dan akan kecelaan bakhil yakni kikir, a condemnation of love of wealth and of miserliness
f. 59r, Bab 8, pada kecelaan kasih akan kemegahan dan menyatakan kecelaan ria, a condemnation of ostentation and status
f. 84r: Bab 9, pada menyatakan kecelaan k.b.r dan ‘ujub, a condemnation of pride and conceit
p. 94v: Bab 10, pada menyatakan akan kecelaan ghurur yakni kecelaan orang yang terpedaya, a condemnation of self-delusion
Colophon on f.136v gives the date of the completion of the translation of the original work in Mecca on 19 Safar 1190 [sic, i.e. 1197] (24 January 1783). This MS was probably copied in the 19th century.
Ownership note on f.139v: Inilah kitab orang Tanoh Abee d.w.q di negeri b.l.y larantak berajar? bandarsah kelupang serta orang m.kampung nama Muhammad Yusuf adi Ke(ci)hik Abdullah.

139 ff., Dutch paper, 215 x 170 mm. Black ink with rubrication, in a small neat hand; 21 lines per page; catchwords on the verso of each folio. The MS comprises 2 sections each consisting of 5 or 6 quires sewn together, within a brown leather wrapper with envelope flap, lined with old manuscript pages.

Possibly consigned to Christie's by Arthur Probsthain’s, as inside the MS is an envelope postmarked 1933 addressed to Arthur Probsthain, on which a pencil identification has been written: Siyar as-salikin ila ‘Ibadah Rabb al-‘Alamin.
