- Title:
- Draft treatise against papal supremacy by Edward VI
- Scope & Content:
-
Contents:
ff. 2r-3v: An inserted paper bifolium contains an unfinished copy of the preface to a collection of passages of Scripture on faith by Edward VI addressed to his uncle the Duke of Somerset, Edward Seymour, in French. A complete copy is found in Add MS 9000. It is followed by practice of both capital and lower-case letters.
ff. 4r-40v: Draft autograph copy of a treatise against papal supremacy in French by Edward VI, entitled 'Alencontre les abus du monde'. and dated 13 December 1548 (f. 4r). The end of the treatise is dated 14 March 1549 (f. 40v). The 'fair' autograph copy is found in Cambridge, University Library, MS Dd.12.59 (see MacCulloch, Tudor Church Militant (1999), p. 226 n. 41).
The manuscript is corrected throughout. The most likely individual responsible for these corrections is Jean Belmaine (fl. 1546-1559), the French tutor of Edward VI.
Jean Belmaine's hand is found in Royal MS 16 E. I, Royal MS 20 A. XIV, Add MS 74745, and possibly also Royal MS 16 E. XXVIII.
