Photographs of India and Ceylon (Sri Lanka)

Scope & Content:

A miscellaneous collection of photographic views of India and Ceylon, in two principal parts:

1. Folios from a disbound album comprising albumen print views of India (mainly Kashmir and Simla), by Samuel Bourne, W. Baker, John Burke, Baker and Burke and others, 1860s-80s. The majority of the photographs were taken in the 1860s by Samuel Bourne and others, but the album itself appears to have been compiled at a later date, probably in the 1880s (prints 1-36)

2. Miscellaneous views, portrait groups and postcards, mainly of Ceylon, 1920s-50s, apparently collected by the father of the donor. The photographs include a series of views by the Plâté studio of amateur theatrical productions, groups taken at social and sporting events at the Darawella Club and postcards of Ceylon sent home to England in the mid-1950s (prints 37-80)
